Thursday 6/15/17, 5pm, Norman B. Leventhal Park

Inspire Arts and Music is pleased to announce Mayor Martin J. Walsh as the first ever recipient of the Champion Award at the 4th Annual Concert in the Park for his contributions to the local arts community. The award will be given annually to an individual who serves as a leader for the arts in the City of Boston.

Since taking office in 2014, Mayor Walsh has served as a driving force in promoting and preserving the local arts and music in Boston. After a nationwide search, Mayor Walsh appointed Julie Burros as Chief of Arts and Culture, restoring the position for the first time in 20 years. In her first year, Chief Burros oversaw the Boston Creates process, resulting in Boston’s first ever cultural plan. Working in tandem with community leaders, Mayor Walsh has pledged over $1 million in support for the arts as well as initiated countless town hall discussions, workshops, and partnerships to promote local arts and music. Because of his diligent support, Boston organizations, such as Inspire, thrive in their mission to educate community members about the benefits of the arts.

"Boston is a City that prides itself on our creative talent and efforts to move the arts closer to the heart of all we do," said Mayor Martin J. Walsh. "We have prioritized the arts through Boston Creates, the City's cultural plan, which is guiding our creative vision for the future, ensuring that arts are accessible to all, and that artists of all types can thrive. I am honored to be recognized with Champion Award, and look forward to continuing our work together to make Boston a municipal arts leader."

Mayor Walsh will be honored at Inspire Arts & Music’s 4th annual Concert in the Park held at 5 p.m. on June 15th at Norman B. Leventhal Park. Headlined by Inspire Arts & Music’s best youth performing groups, including the Boston Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps, the free event will feature musical performances, speakers from influential musicians, and appearances from government officials. Mayor Walsh’s accolades will be recognized at the concert before joining Inspire Arts & Music and sponsors for a reception at the Langham Hotel.

“Concert in the Park provides a unique opportunity for the Boston community to experience the benefits of the performing arts right outside their workplace,” said Chris Holland, Executive Director of Inspire Arts & Music. “This year, we are pleased to welcome our first ever Champion Award recipient, Mayor Walsh, whose contributions allow culturally enriching opportunities, such as Concert in the Park, to continue to flourish around the city of Boston. Thanks to the generous efforts of Mayor Walsh, we can continue our mission to inspire Boston youth to pursue their passions in the arts.”
